Vice President & General Manager, WSLS - Roanoke
Garry Kelly joined WSLS as Vice President and General Manager in August, 2015. His arrival coincided with a major effort to raise the station's profile throughout the community. The WSLS team embarked on new projects such as market-wide events to collect and safely shred personal documents. There were multiple food and blood drives that continue today and a campaign to raise tens of thousands of dollars for homeless students in the Roanoke city school system. WSLS teams up yearly with the U.S. Marines on the Toys for Tots campaign and with Habitat for Humanity to build one family a new "Home for the Holidays."
There was also a major push to expand the WSLS news product. A noon news and two-hour weekend morning newscasts were added. The expansion included a new bureau in Danville and the implementation of a market-wide network of weather cameras. The improved product resulted in higher ratings and the most state, regional and national awards in the market.
Before coming to Roanoke Garry spent 18 years as the News Director at ABC 33/40, a start-up operation that he helped build into one of the most powerful stations in Birmingham. During his time there, ABC 33/40 won more state, regional and national awards than any competitor. He's also served as a news manager at stations in Huntsville, Nashville and Denver. His first job in TV was at WXYZ-TV in Detroit where he was a writer, producer and assignment editor.
Garry is active in the Roanoke community and serves on the board of the Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Virginia.
